The Beautiful Pearl!

by Holly Swainson

“Dinner’s ready!” called Milly’s mum. Milly was an octopus and so was her mum.

They lived in the deep-sea catching fish, crabs, and starfish. Milly was eight years old and she always had a cute little smile on her face except when something really bad happened. It was salmon for dinner tonight, Milly’s least favourite. “Yuck,” grumbled Milly as she swam into the cave where they lived and smelled the rotten smell of salmon.

“Salmon again mum! It’s not fair because we had salmon last night and the night before and the night before and I know that you know that I don’t like it one bit!” shouted Milly, getting angrier by the second.

“Oh Milly darling, I’m sorry, it’s just I can’t find any other type of fish,” said Milly’s mum.

“Ok, come with me,” gestured Milly. “Come with me and we will find a different type of fish,” she said.

*  *  *

After two hours of looking, Milly got really tired. She got so tired she fell asleep and her mum had to carry her home. On the way Milly’s mum spotted a few enormous starfish so she picked them up, one in each tentacle, except the two tentacles she was carrying Milly with. Then they went home. Milly’s mum put the starfish in a hole in the cave and then put Milly into bed.

*  *  *

In the morning, it was Milly’s birthday and she got to have the starfish, one for each meal, since they were her favourite food. Her dad had been out all night looking for something to give Milly for her birthday and he had found something so perfect he wanted it himself! It was a beautiful orange shell. He hadn’t opened it yet, he was going to let Milly open it when she was ready.

*  *  *

Milly woke up and swam into the kitchen, happy to see all of the decorations out and then she remembered it was her birthday and she went to find her parents. She swam into the main lounge room and her parents jumped out and scared Milly so much she shot up in the water and banged her head on the ceiling.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Milly, happy birthday to you!” sang Milly’s mum and dad.

Milly floated back down again. “Thank you,” she said. Her parents handed her the shell and Milly opened it. Inside there was a beautiful white pearl. “Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!” shouted Milly happily. She put the shell down and hugged her mum and dad, but when Milly turned back to get her pearl, it was gone.

“Where’s my pearl?” questioned Milly.

“I don’t know, I thought you put it on the table?” asked Milly’s dad.

“Yes, I did, but now it’s gone,” said Milly puzzledly.

“We have to find it!” said Milly’s mum.

“Look! A shark tail in our cave!” shouted Milly. “I think the shark took it!”

“Let’s get that shark!” cried Milly’s mother.

“Before it’s too late!” shouted Milly’s father, annoyed that it was gone.

“Let’s swim!” they all shouted.

*  *  *

After a long time of chasing the shark, some seaweed wooshed at the shark and he flipped over onto his back making him drop the shell. Milly swam over and picked it up and it was perfectly fine, so they swam home and enjoyed the rest of Milly’s birthday fun!

THE END

How does a Party Popper Pop?

We wondered how a party popper pops.
We looked at the labels on the party poppers - there is a lot of safety information.
We imagined what might be going on inside the container - we draw what we thought

Some of our theories:

Nitya - https://youtu.be/jHBcrtKKRdY

Joel - https://youtu.be/GherlYIrv7k

Harry - https://youtu.be/Bu7-VXNvxcQ

We did get to POP them after we had dissected one...WITH safety glasses

The Science of LIGHT

Check out what we got up to in science this week....

We looked at how light is reflected off surfaces using UV light
we looked at creating florescent light with tonic water and highlighter pen
we experimented with plasma balls
we looked at making rainbows with prisms and water
we wondered if we could see in the dark and discovered we couldn't - we looked in a shoe box and couldn't see the object inside until we let light in by lifting the corner of the box

science in a van

cool thing come on!
On Wednesday I went on the science In a van lots of people were

exited there was new things on. Like how to make cloud.

Every one was laughing when the people were dancing

in front of the stage. Then they stop and walk bake then we watch

the ordinance. but that was the funny thing. and there another

thing Mister D sat on the pointy chair he side it was relaxing

but it will kind of sting with one of those sharpies.

THE MOST AMAZING SCIENCE DAY EVER

WOW that was awesome! Today I went to SCIENCE IN A VAN with my class!! Today is Wednesday 18.3.15 I was sitting in the school hall watching something sooo unbelievable it will blow your mind away... not for real!! But it is something you will want to be at more than your favourite place !!!

I learned sooo much stuff !!! I bet that when SCIENCE IN A VAN comes to your school you`ll wish it was always SCIENCE IN A VAN!!! That`s how I feel right now!!

But the person showing us everything [Alan] got a teacher [Mr. D] to sit on over 300 I think it was nails!! They blew up a balloon and got a nail...but just 1 nail and popped it...but when he sat on it he was fine!!! It`s because all of your weight pushing onto lots & lots of nails!! Like say you stepped on 1 stone it would be sour but if you stepped on lots of stones it wouldn`t be as sour as 1 stone!!!

We also got to see Alan make a CLOUD IN A BOTTLE!!! I know it sounds CRAZY but nothing is impossible... apart from wolverine and silly stuff!!  ; - )

BYE NOW!!

Science in a Van

On Wednesday 18th of March, I was sitting in the hall watching something sooo unbelievable that you  will want to watch it more than going to Rainbows End!! My pupil in my eyes got bigger and bigger and yours should two because i was so amazing!!!

Also I learned so many science things, science words, and the show will be your new favourite thing!!!! You can watch it all day and never stop... WOW!!!! Everyone would LOVE science after the show finishes because its unbelievable and fun!!!

I saw some weird things, such as a teacher sitting on 300 nails and it didn"t hurt him... because if you stood on a lot of stones it wouldn't hurt and if you stood on one stone it would hurt you!!! Ha ha ha ha!! They popped a balloon.

These are the 2 science words I learned is... carbon dioxide and Oxygen!!

WACKY SCIENCE IN A VAN

On Wednesday the 18th of March in the Laingholm hall we had the amazing science in a van. Don't let the name fool you its not in a van the name of the people were called Alan & Emily in to the show Mr D sat on the chair of nails over 300 hundred  of them and did not feel a thing because his weight was spread evenly, it was funny looking at his face. Then the little kids went to there class then we learned the 3 matter. Are gas liquid and solid I had the best time oh did I say thay were funny

camouflage octopus.

Octopus are colour blind. and they camouflage in to the grass or seaweed. and grow as well as change colour very quickly. Their very amazing!they look like a unusual shell which people call a coral. Sometimes they can scare the predators away.

If you step on the octopus in will spray you  in the face with ink because it hurts them.WOW it's not like the only trick.... they can puff  up in size. and they can transform their colour or body shape.  It is very intimidating!

They change their skin into light blue like the sky or like the sea. and they are very rare and their skin is sensitive. If I would pick something to transform I  would pick a bird so I can fly about or a person wait I already am ha ha funny

Can you spot the Octopus?

Jonathen Gorden an underwater diver reports on a rare sight camouflage octopus, he says he was trying to get a closer look at a shell that fascinated him. He was filming lovely coral in the Caribbean, when he noticed something moving, and there it was the one and only... A CAMOUFLAGE OCTOPUS!!!!!!!!!!!

 But camouflage is just the beginning this rare octopus can also puff up to look more strong and powerful!

It can also spray ink into it's predators face.

 Did you know octopuses are colour blind

 The octopus is one of the three marine animals that are camouflage in the world. The two others are cuttle fish and squid. These octopuses are crafty little cephalopods!

  If I could camouflage into anything I want it would be the ground but it wouldn't hurt or smell bad!!!??What would you choose?

 Here is a video you might like to see

The amazing science of THAT DRESS!

Room 16 looked at THAT DRESS today! Most of us saw it was blue and black. 5 people in the class saw it was white and gold.
We tested some theories about if it was affected by the angle where we were. We wondered if it was affected by the eye colour of people.
We wondered if we would see different colours if we saw someone wearing it.

What do you think?

Freezing

In Harbin which is in the North China  it's -16 degrees! The people in china are building massive sculptures made out of snow and ice they even put lasers in them! At night they glow like a disco ball. Imagine being there it would be great! They even have a ice slides! We looked at this after we had done an ice experiment.
Yesterday we did an experiment on melting ice circles. First we wrote numbers from 1 to 6 on a sheet the title was ice ice baby. Then Miss Cheeseman rolled a dice the winner was the one who melted it fastest Jaydens group.
We rubbed it on the table very hard which got rid of allot of water which made it be allot essayer to melt and later everyone's ice melted.
it was existing because I thought that it would't melt but it did until we broke it.

Paper banger

11/14/2013 Thursday
We were sitting on the mat thinking what Miss Cheeseman was going to tell us and then she gave us?
A piece of paper and said " it mite get harder" I thought we were making a paper air plane.but it was a paper banger or you can call it the mother a noyer.
This is the instructions for the paper banger!!!

Fold the piece of paper from the side then unfold it and fold the corners down to the middle on both sides fold the to corners to each ofer the fold it again then you will see two wholes you pull them out and fold them down then fold it so it lookes like a square fold it to a triangle and then hold the skinnyist corner hold it on top of your head with top corner facing down put the paper banger on top of you head and slam it down. It should look like this.

M & M's experiment

On Tuesday in the afternoon we did a science experiment  it was on m & ms  now we haft to do the instructions first we got 4 different coloured m & ms now we haft to get a petri dish then we put the m & ms in the petri dish then we got a bit of water now Mrs Cheeseman will pour the water for us. Then we had to wait for 10 minutes until the colours got sucked off the m & ms we figured out that on the top that it was clear on the bottom it had  lots of colour  like a rainbow.
caution DO NOT KNOCK THE TABLE because the colours will go brown and white sugar will float on the top of the water. And if the sugar comes off you will be able to see the yummy chocolate but Toby’s group didn’t knock there petri dish so they got a super coloured water the blue joined with the yellow and made a green then the blue and red made purple also the yellow and red made orange but then the brown didn’t make any colours with the other colours.
This is the instructions;
1 get a petri dish;
2 get 4 different colours of m & ms;
3 poor a small amount of water in the petri dish;
4 do not knock the table;
5 see what happens;
prediction what we think will happen; the colour will go away; 2 the colour in the water will change rainbow; 3 the m & m’s  will float like paper; 4 the m & m’s will go white ;

observation what we saw happening; 1 the colour is combining  with the other colours; 2 the water on the top is clear on the bottom it is not clear because the m & m’s colour is on the bottom;
conclusion why
we think this happened; 1 if  you knock it you will make the water move and make it all brown; 2 the colours where on a shield of suger but the water dissolve the colour 1 shield down now the m & ms are white but water now is dissolve the suger now theres a chocolate shield now but the water strikes back but the chocolate is already wet so the water makes it break.

The amazing EGGsperiment

Room 22 did an excellent science experiment and it was called the amazing EGGsperiment. First we boiled 4 smelly eggs, Miss Cheeseman hates eggs! We had to peel the shell off the eggs, it was a messy job but we still did it, one was a disaster but it worked out fine. We had to try and get a boiled egg into a glass jar that was too small for the egg but without breaking it. It was time to burn the paper, Miss Cheeseman put the rustling paper in the jar then Henderson swiftly put the egg on the jar. But the paper kept on burning out, so then Kiana came up with the idea to use newspaper and it worked in the big jar. We tried again in the little jar but it didn't work but the egg that time got halfway through though. We were very pleased that one of them worked.We learnt that the egg slides down because fire needs oxygen and when we put the egg on top it blocked the oxygen and the air outside the jar pushes the egg into the jar.
Hopefully room 22 had a great time.                       By Kiana and Chantelle
