On a cloudy sunny day, room 1 and room 22 went to Corbans Art Centre. We loudly marched there like big elephants. Finally we were there and the manager came and showed us where the 3 rooms we are allowed to go in and the managers name was Shelly. In room 2 there was two big sheets of paper that we can write what we liked about the art. My favourite was the koros that the year 8's did at Sunderland school, I liked it because it was a circle and it had a dark colour with black. After that we went to see some paintings of birds. My favourite paintings of the birds was the swan in the office and the chickens at the restaurant eating noodles. We went to see the photos that people took for a competition. Soon we had to walk back to school and on the way back Chantelle, Neha, Cameron and I played I-Spy and it was really hard to think of what word they are thinking of. When we were at school we were bursting for food and water so we had lunch and went to go and play.

Friday, June 25, 2010

On the 24th of June room 22 and 21 went to Corban's Art Centre and we made a Korowai
it was so cool. First we had hession material and we had to fold the top down to about 3\4 then we had to put two fingers down at the bottom and put a line across then do it again but this time we had to do it up above the line. We had to get the long grass and cut it up the top diagonal and stub it in the first line and up through the top line and back down [like a fish].
Then turn it around and pull it so it won't came out. Then we had to get same more long grass a keep on going to the end.
Next got yellow leaves [called kenko] and do the same it is just like diving down like a fish and coming up like a dolphin and then back down and pull at the back. Then we got some feathers. This time we had to flip our korowai over and thread the feathers through. then we were finished and had to sew it together along the fold line. it was really awesome working with the fibres - but the bits of grass gets everywhere. check out our photos here
also look at Mr Qadir's awesome shots here too

Room 8 and 28 Go On A Trip!
On Tuesday, 9th November, Room 8 and 28 went on a trip to Corbans Estate. We had to walk from school to Corbans Estate (which took about 30 minutes). When we arrived, we split into two groups. The first group did flax weaving and the others weaved head bands for themselves. The mamas helped us if we had any problems or if we were struggling. When we were flax weaving, we had to make flax flowers. We had to carefully shape the flax to give it the right shape. Sometimes the shaping part was really hard but we all got used to it. When we were making the headbands, we got given 3 strips. Two of them were the same colour and 1 of them was a different colour. The strategy of weaving was down and over, down and over. The best part was eating lunch under the trees in the park because it was so refreshing in the sun. What was also really fun was watching different schools perform at the special festival where heaps of schools performed a different kind of culture. One of the topics that the schools did was that some boys did the Maori Haka. After we did everything at Corbans Estate, we made our way back to school. Although we were only there for two and a half hours, we had heaps of fun.
